Students choose SIL for many reasons. Flexible, college-style schedules and the enormous variety (165 and growing!) of UC Approved a-g courses offered are certainly at the top of the list.
SIL Students work with career teachers who are passionate about their vocation and devout to their academic discipline. Our long-tenured instructors will challenge students to surpass the bounds of what they think they can do, while providing guidance and mentorship along the way. Classroom learning conceived as a collaboration between teacher and student allows students to explore questions, make new connections, and demonstrate authentic understanding through synthesis.
As a WASC-accredited high school with UC-approved courses, credits taken at SIL transfer easily to a student's high school of record or prospective college.
In the 1:1 and small group setting, students are mentored through course material at a challenging, student-centric pace, demonstrating their mastery of the material as they go.
We build a personalized calendar for each student. Pupils generally meet 2-3 times per week, though that changes with student availability, goals, and deadlines. There is no minimum number of hours of instruction required to complete a course. Rather a student finishes by satisfying the requirements of the curriculum, hence the “Mastery Learning” designation. Exams happen outside of scheduled class time (excepting the spoken portions of language exams) when the student and teacher think the student is ready to address the material.
