Students choose SIL for the flexibility of schedule and the variety of courses offered. Students choose SIL to work with teachers passionate about their subject and devoted to their vocation who will challenge them to surpass the bounds of what they think they can do and support them along the way. Classroom learning conceived as a collaboration between teacher and student allows students to address questions, work through confusions, explore connections, and produce authentic demonstrations of their understanding.
As a WASC-accredited high school with UC-approved courses, credits taken at SIL transfer back to a student's school of record. We work with a student's availability to establish a recurring schedule for each course with teachers available 8am-8pm. In meeting with their teacher one-to-one, students move through course material at their own pace as they are able to demonstrate their understanding of the material.
Students generally meet 2-3 times per week, though that changes with student availability, goals, and deadlines. There is no minimum number of hours of instruction required to complete a course. Rather a student finishes by satisfying the requirements of the curriculum. Exams happen outside of scheduled class time (excepting the spoken portions of language exams) when the student and teacher think the student is ready to address the material.
